Lord Krishna, one of the most common worshipped deities in the Hindu Religion. It is believed that Lord Krishna was born in jail cell over five thousand years ago to Devaki and Vasudeva. It is also believed that it was the Eight Avatar of Lord Vishnu.Krishna, along with his brother Balrama appeared with the sole aim of getting rid of evil powers on earth, which were increasing day by day under the rule of evil king, Kansa. In His Bhagavad-Gita, Lord Krishna promises:"Whenever and wherever there is a decline in religious practice,O descendant of Bharata, and
a predominant rise of irreligion--at that time I descend Myself.

To deliver the pious and to annihilate the miscreants, as well as to reestablish the principles of religion, I myself appear millennium after millennium.

Krishna appeared on midnight of 8th day of the dark half of month Sravana. It is believed that he spent over 125 years on earth before disappearing. His departure marks the beginning of current age known as Kalyug.

His childhood phase was spent in Gokula under the parentage of Nanda and Yasoda. Till the age of 8-9, he proved to the villagers that he is not an ordinary boy by killing various demons and doing other extraordinary things. Among these was the most popular Raas lila with the girls of village also known as Gopis. God Krishna enjoyed his rasa dance also known as dance of love. This dance normally occurs in autumn season at night under a full moon where, Lord Krishna used to captivate the young gopis with his flute.

Among the Gopis, was Radha, the childhood devotee of Krishna. Due to their eternal love, Lord Krishna is also popularly known as Radha-Krishna. Their love story symbolizes the love between God and Human.

After his childhood phase in Gokula, his uncle Karnsa invited him and Balrama to Mathura for wrestling match. But behind this was his master plan to kill both these boys. But Krishna and his brother killed Karnsa along with his 8 brothers. For next 18 years Lord Krishna lived in Mathura.

In later part of their life on Earth, they took part in one of the most historic battle we know as Mahabharta. At the start of this war, Lord Krishna gave his most famous divine message, now known as Bhagvad Gita to his disciple Arjuna, son of Kunti and a famous Pandav. Krishna was chatriot to Arjuna in the battle and play an important role in deciding the outcome of battle.

Rasleela is one of the divine activities, which Sri krishna played with his gopis on the banks of river Yamuna in Vrindavan.

Among all the gopis, Radha was closest to Lord. Her love for Lord Krishna was complete and in its purest form. Sri Krishna was ten years old when he performed Rasleela. Rasleelas are particularly performed in the city of Vrindavan. .

Legend
It is said in Bhagavata Puran, that Lord Krishna was loved immensely by gopis. The love that the gopis felt for Lord Krishna was divine and in its purest form. This special bond that Krishna shared with the gopis made them forget all about their worldly chores. The gopis were totally merged in the love of god through the practice of constant surrender.

Rasleela
During the rasleela Lord Krishna promised the gopis that he will dance with all of them. So Lord Krishna stood in the center surrounded by gopis who danced and sang in his glory. Sometimes Sri Krishna would put his arms around the neck of gopis and all of them would dance together. The Demigods would witness this divine dance and throw flowers from the sky giving their blessings.

Lord Krishna Disappearance
Performing rasleeela with Lord Krishna, the gopis started considering themselves extremely lucky and superior to other women. One night during Rasleela, Lord Krishna did the disappearing act to teach the gopis a lesson of humility. Not finding Lord Krishna amongst them they became extremely miserable and started praying for his come back. They even sang songs popularly known as Gopika Gitam. Lord returned after many pleadings.

Rasleela Today
In today's age rasleela is performed only by Brahmin boys between the ages of 10-13 years with the main theme focusing on the formative years of Lord Krishna. There are five main raslilas performed like janamleela- details regarding the birth of Lord Krishna, Shankarleela, Putanaleela- Killing of demoness Putana, And Nagleela- killing of the dreaded serpent Kaliya.

Krishna - The All Wonderful Absolute Person

krishna_killing_kansa_hb80In Srimad Bhagavatam, we find in many places that Krishna is glorified as "adbhuta karmana" (one whose actions are wonderful). In the 10th canto, we come across this word when Sri Sukadeva Goswami recites the Lord's pastimes related to the killing of demons like Putana, Dhenukasura, Aghasura etc. A question came up in my mind, "The Supreme Lord is the creator, maintainer and annihilator of this material world and this activity cannot be done by anyone else. He does all this just by His sankalpa. For such a person, it is not at all a difficult task to destroy the demons who are tiny specks in creation. He is the one who gives powers to these demons. Then why He is called 'adbhuta karmana', just because He kills demons or defeats Jarasandha's army and why Srila Sukadeva Goswami should explain such incidents in great details with great wonder ?" Its like glorifying a great boxing champion as wonderful when he kills a mosquito. The person may actually get offended by this glorification(?). However by the blessings of Maharaj, I came across the answer for the above question in the following shloka of Srimad Bhagavatam (10.50.29)
sthity-udbhavaantam bhuvana-trayasya yah
samihite 'nanta-gunah sva-leelayaa
na tasya citram para-paksha-nigrahas
tathaapi martyaanuvidhasya varnyate
"For Him who orchestrates the creation, maintenance and destruction of the three worlds and who possesses unlimited spiritual qualities, it is hardly amazing that He subdues an opposing party. Still, when the Lord does so, imitating human behavior, sages glorify His acts."
Though the Lord is all powerful and can do anything He likes, even small (from His point of view) deeds such as killing demons are glorified as wonderful because of the following reasons.
  1. For devotees who forget that the Lord is the Absolute Truth (because of their excessive love for Him), these superhuman activities appear wonderful because they see the Lord as their companion and not the Supreme Person.
  2. For others who do not recognize Him as the Absolute Truth and consider Him to be just a powerful human being, these activities sound very wonderful because they cannot be imitated by normal human beings.
  3. For great sages and scholars, the Lord's activities are wonderful because they are completely spiritual (beyond the material modes) and just by hearing them, one can attain liberation from birth and death. Nowhere, we have the instance of a person becoming liberated by hearing somebody's activities. In Bhagavatam, the pastimes of baby Krishna stealing the butter etc in Vrindavan is described in a few shlokas. Everyday many living enitities in this material world steal. But great sages like Sukadev Goswami do not glorify them or record them in the scriptures. Also we cannot attain liberation by listening to our pastimes.
  4. All His activities are wonderful because whatever the Lord does is beneficial to all living entities. When He kills the demons, the demons attain liberation from material sufferings being purified by the Lord's direct touch. People who hear about such activities also become purified and walk straight on the path back to Godhead. In this regard, Srila Prabhupada writes - "God is Absolute. So even His killing is good. When He becomes angry at someone, even His object of anger is blessed". So all His actions are nothing but expression of His compassion towards all living entities. We should submissively study the scriptures with faith to appreciate this fact.
It is because of this reason the Lord makes a solemn declaration in Bhagavad Gita verse 4.9
janma karma ca me divyam / evam yo vetti tattvatah
tyaktvaa deham punar janma / naiti maam eti'so arjuna
One who knows the transcendental nature of My appearance and activities does not, upon leaving the body, take his birth again in this material world, but attains My eternal abode, O Arjuna.
In this regard Maharaj was explaining to us in Rajkot, "Why to think about His creation of this world? If we just see our body, we can understand that Krishna is adbhuta karmanah. Our mouth is the most sophisticated plumbing system. It produces the exact amount of saliva required to digest the food. There is food pipe, wind pipe inside our body. When I eat and breath at the same time, the food never goes to the wind pipe. It is so perfectly arranged. The blood vessels in our body are so much intertwined and they work in perfect co-ordination to ensure continuous pumping of blood throughout our body. In this way, if we just study our body we can understand that Krishna's acts/creation are wonderful. No one can imitate His actions."
All we need to do is to submissively study and hear His glorious activities and by such purification process we can reach His lotus feet.
I pray at the lotus feet of Maharaj and Srila Prabhupada so that I will get some taste and faith in listening to the pastimes of the Supreme Lord and get purified.

Lotus Krishna !

Waking up Krishna

O Prince of Vraj! O Kunvar! Wake up, it is morning and lotus-flowers are blooming in the ponds. The Kumudni¹ flowers are collapsing and bumble bees are getting out from creepers (to get to lotuses and flowers).||1||

All the birds are chirping loudly and You can also hear the rooster shout. The cow in barn is running towards her calf to feed her.||2||

The moon is without shine now in the presence of resplendent sun and people are singing the morning chants and eulogies. O Shyam of Surdas! Wake up O the one Who holds a lotus flower.||3||

Notes:

¹ Kumudni is a white pond flower which blooms during night unlike lotuses.
